Product Review: Shea Moisture Organic Black Soap Purification Masque

If you haven’t already figured it out, I’m a huge fan of Shea Moisture products.   A while back I tried and fell hard for their Purification Masque from their Organic Black Soap line of hair products.  Let me just say that this is the best damn deep conditioner that I have ever used in my life!  Yes!  It’s that serious!  So let’s get down to the nitty-gritty of my love affair with this product.

My Thoughts:

I use the Purification Masque faithfully as my weekly deep conditioner.  It has a creamy consistency but it’s not extremely thick or stiff.  It’s a little on the runny side.  I’ve heard a lot of people complain about the scent, saying it was way too strong, but to me it smells like fresh bananas.  It smells YUMMY!

My hair literally melts as soon as this stuff hits my strands…like seriously…my hair melts!  I slather it on in sections and immediately my hair is saturated, crazy soft and any type of kink, knot, etc. melts away.  This masque has the best “slip” that I have ever experienced in a conditioner.  Considering the fact that my detangling sessions used to be extremely rough and traumatizing at times (I used to lose soooo much freaking hair!), this masque blew me away with how easily it detangled my hair.  It makes detangling so much easier.  I normally sit under my steamer for about 20 minutes and this just adds to the softness and moisturizing properties.  After rinsing out the masque my hair is crazy soft, shiny and moisturized.  This masque immediately hydrates, softens, moisturizes and detangles my hair like no other.  I also noticed that my natural coils and curls are extremely defined and pop like crazy after rinsing the conditioner out.  That’s a sure sign that my hair loves this stuff.  What more can you ask for in a deep conditioner?!

I also use this masque when I cowash every other week. I’m not a big fan of shampooing my hair every week so I alternate between shampooing and the cowashing.  I apply the masque to dry or slightly damp hair in sections.  I then steam my hair, detangle and rinse.  The african black soap and Kaolin clay seems to act as a very mild cleansing agent.  I no longer have major issues with itchy scalp and dandruff (thanks to coconut oil and castor oil) so I can’t confirm its claim of alleviating itchy scalp and ridding of dandruff.  My scalp feels refreshed and my hair strands feel clean and aren’t weighed down from the products I’ve used over the past week.  After rinsing I still get amazingly soft, shiny, moisturized hair.  Hell yeah!  🙂

Trash it or stash it?

So overall, this product blows every other deep conditioner/masque I’ve used out of the water.  I give it an A+++.  I’d been on a mad hunt for the perfect deep conditioner for some time and was elated when I got such awesome results with this masque.  Not only is it a great deep conditioner, it is also a pretty damn good cowash conditioner.  I stock up on this masque and have yet to find another that yields the same results.  You can purchase this product at Walgreens or Target for about $10.  If you haven’t found that “Perfect Deep Conditioner” I highly recommend you try the Shea Moisture Organic Black Soap Purification Masque (Whoa!  That’s a mouth full!).  Does that thoroughly explain why I’m head over hills in love with this product?

What is your favorite deep conditioner? Have you ever used the Shea Moisture Organic Black Soap Purification Masque?  If so, what are your thoughts on it?

  1. This is definitely my next hair product purchase! I tried the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque and hated it because my hair was so hard/brittle…since the consistency is different for the purification masque I want to test it out. Currently, both of my hair textures react well to the ORS Replenishing Conditioner (good slip, smells good, and inexpensive) but would love to experiment with more conditioners 🙂

  2. Ok. I’m convinced! I will definitely add this to my “To Try” list. I haven’t really found a deep conditioner I’m wild about, and to be honest, I don’t DC as much as I should. Like Lady P, I didn’t care too much for the Deep Treatment Masque. I felt the smell was too strong (and I usually love scented products) and I didn’t like the way my hair felt afterward. Maybe something with a lighter texture (like the Purification Masque) will be more up my alley. Excellent review!!! 🙂
